How to activate the electronic DNI electronically

More and more people have an electronic DNI or DNIe. It was the logical evolution of this document, becoming a digital tool, similar to bank cards with their corresponding chip. In this article we are going to see how to activate electronic ID and thus be able to carry out any procedure online.

One of the fundamental aspects of the electronic DNI is that it works with a private key known solely and exclusively by its owner. Thus, in addition to the physical document that we all know, we have the possibility of accessing various telematic transactions and electronic document signatures. In addition, it is a document compatible with other European digital identification projects.

What is the DNIe

As everyone knows, the General Directorate of the Police is the body in charge of issuing the electronic National Identity Document (DNIe), which came into existence in 2006. Later, in 2015, this DNIe began to incorporate the NFC technology.

The purpose of the DNIe is prove our identity both in the real world and in the digital realm. The signing of digital documents through it has the same legal validity as a real signature in our own handwriting.

Its integrated chip contains the same data that appears on the physical card, plus a series of integrated electronic certificates. The advantage of this is that of being able to carry out numerous procedures online in the Public Administrations in a completely secure way. Also with many other public and private companies. No need to travel or queue.

How to request the electronic DNI

To process the application for the electronic DNI for the first time, the physical presence of the holder is essential. You must go in person to the corresponding DNI office, pay the legally established fee (12 euros to be paid in cash) and present the following documents:

  • Birth certificate issued by the corresponding Civil Registry. The date of issue must be a maximum of 6 months prior to the date of submission of the application, as well as having the express mention that it is issued for the sole purpose of obtaining this document.
  • Una photography recent in colour. With a white background with a completely uncovered head.

If it is a first registration, that is to say, that it is the first time that the DNI is requested, both physical and electronic, it will also be necessary to attach a certificate or registration form from the City Council, which must have been issued with a maximum advance of three months to the date of application.

In the case of under 14 years or incapacitated persons, the document will be delivered in the presence of the person entrusted with parental authority or guardianship, or by the person who has been empowered by the latter.

How to activate the DNIe

After the request, issuance and delivery of the electronic National Identity Document to its holder, it is necessary to proceed to Logical personalization and activation of your digital certificates. All this can be done at the police station itself where the issuance procedures are carried out.

In almost all National Police stations there are machines specifically designed for this purpose (you can see them in the image above) called DNIe Update Points. Once we have the DNIe in our hands, we only have to insert the document in the indicated slot and place our finger on the fingerprint reader, in order to verify our identity. From this point on, all you have to do is follow the steps that the machine will indicate for the activation of the DNIe.

Once you have done so, the screen will guide you through the activation process, which does not take more than five minutes. It will be necessary, among other things, for us to establish a Security PIN for certificates.

We must also bear in mind that this activation process is every 30 months, since that is usually the maximum validity time of digital certificates before they expire.

Use the DNIe on our computer

In order to develop all the utilities of the electronic DNI, it will be necessary to have a hardware reader for connection to our computer. This can be purchased at a computer store and also in supermarkets.

Done this, there is still something to do: install the DNI-e validation certificates in our browser. These validation certificates are included in the Cryptographic Module of the DNI-e, which can be downloaded from the Downloads Area of ​​the DNI-e web portal.

And finally, it only remains to perform the verification that our electronic ID works with these easy steps:

  1. Firstly, we insert our DNI-e in the DNI-e reader.
  2. Generally, the system will recognize it automatically and will request the Access PIN (The same one that we select at the DNI-e Update Point at the police station).
  3. Enter the PIN and click on Accept. We have three attempts before the DNI-e is blocked. In this case, we should reactivate it at the DNI-e Update Point.
