Microsoft Word is a program that millions of people use every day. The well-known office suite is an essential tool for all types of users, from companies to students. It is important to know how to make good use of this program, something that implies knowing certain tricks for better use. This is something that can be applied to such an important action as select all in Word.

There are times when we are working on a document in Word in which we need to select everything. It is a common action, which we are going to use in many cases. In addition, we have different ways to do this, so it is good to know the various ways that this program offers us to carry out this action. This way you will be able to choose the one that best suits you at all times.

Word is a software that gives us many options when we want to do something. Also in the case of wanting to select all the content, we are provided with various options that we can use, all of them really simple. So you will not have problems when choosing that method that you consider is best for you. We explain what each of these options consists of to select everything in Word, as well as in which cases it may be better to make use of each one of them.

Microsoft Word Features

Word offers us several options to write and represent fractions

One of the simplest ways to select everything in Word, no matter what platform we are using this program on (Windows, Mac, Linux or Android), it's a simple keyboard shortcut. It is one of the best ways to be able to perform all kinds of actions quickly and easily in the office suite, as well as being easy to remember. As you can imagine, there is a keyboard shortcut that allows us to select everything in Word.

What is that keyboard shortcut? If we want to select everything we will simply have to use Ctrl + E. This is the key combination that allows us to do this in a Microsoft Word document that we are working on at the moment. As we have said, it works on all versions of this software. In some versions of this program we may have to use Ctrl + A to select everything, so check which of the two is the one that works in your case. On Mac you use Command + A or Cmd + A, for example, although it varies depending on the version of Mac you have.

If what we want is to select only text, we have another keyboard shortcut that we can use. In this case it is Shift + Direction keys, which will allow us to select text to our liking in that Word document in which we are working.

This first option is extremely useful if we have to select a text that is very long, since it allows us with a simple gesture to have selected everything, both text and photos that are in it. So it's really comfortable.

Select all feature in Word

Select all in Word

Microsoft Word has a native function with which to select all the content of a document. It is another option that we can resort to in the case of not wanting to use a keyboard shortcut, but it is presented as an equally simple option in this sense. This native function is present in all versions of this office suite, although the location may change slightly depending on the version you have. But you should not have problems when using it in your case. If you want to use this function, these are the steps to follow:

  1. Open any Word document.
  2. Find the Select feature in the menu at the top of the screen.
  3. Click Select.
  4. A small drop-down menu with options opens.
  5. Choose Select all in that list.
  6. All the content of the document is to be selected.

When we have selected all the content of that document, we can do what we want with it. That is, if you want to delete all of that content, you can do it now with a single gesture. If what you wanted to do was copy everything, because you are going to paste it into a new document, you now have everything ready to be able to do this easily. This applies to both text and images or figures in the document, if any. In addition, it is a good option to use in a long text, since with a couple of clicks we have selected everything that is in it, so it will allow us to save time in this regard.

Using the cursor

Word select text

There is a third way with which you can select all the content in a document in Word. In this case we are going to use the mouse to do it, as many of you already know. It is a very comfortable and simple method, although it is not ideal in those cases in which we have a large amount of content. If it is a too long document it is not the best method that we can use to select everything. It is a good option in documents that have a few pages, since it is a fast way in general.

The way we can use this method is simple. We have to go to the beginning of the text and click with the mouse next to that first word of the text. Next we are going to click and then we drag the mouse to the right, so that the text begins to be selected. Since we want to select everything, we will have to keep dragging until we reach the end of this text in the document.

When all is selected you are going to see that the text has a gray shading, which is what tells us that it has been selected, so it is important that everything is shaded. Now you will be able to do whatever you want with this text in Word. If you want to delete it, you just have to press the delete key and if you want to copy, then you can use either the copy button or the keyboard shortcut for it.

Double and triple click

This is a method closely related to the one mentioned now. Not only will we be able to use the cursor, clicking on the text and dragging then throughout the document, but there is another way that surely some of you already know in the document editor. It involves double or triple clicking on the text in question.

If you double click next to a word in Word, you will see that it is shaded or selected then that word. In the case of triple clicking, the entire paragraph will be shaded in the document. So if you wanted to select a whole paragraph in Word, this trick allows you to do it directly in a really simple way. In addition, this is something that will work in any of the versions of this office suite and it will not matter what device you have, which will allow you to use it.

Shift key

Shift key

An option that allows us to also select text in Word is to use the Shift key, in combination with other keys later. It is something that we have already mentioned, but it works well when we want to select large amounts of text in a document in the well-known office suite. In addition, it is a method in which we can choose how much we want to select, which is another element that matters to users, since we may want to select almost everything, but not everything.

This is something we are going to do using the Shift key and the arrow keys. That is, if we place the cursor on the first word of a text, we then press Shift and use the arrow key to the right, so that we will then start selecting that text. We will have to keep pressing until we reach the end of the text or the part that we wanted to select in this regard. It is something comfortable, although it is recommended to use it if you do not have a text that is too long, because otherwise it will be quite heavy to use this system.

On the other hand, we can select everything also from the end of the text. That is, we place the cursor at the end of the text, next to the last word of it and then we use the Shift key and press the left arrow key. In the same way that we have done before, only now we go from the end to the beginning of the text in that document. Again, we have to hold down until we get to cover the entire text or the part that interests us. As in the previous case, it is not something that we should use if we have a text that is too long, because in the end it will end up being somewhat heavy, having to hold down these keys throughout the entire document.
