BlueOS, Vivo's new operating system

blue os

It's the news of the moment: Living has presented BlueOS, its own operating system designed specifically for the brand's mobile devices. In this way, it follows the path already followed by other manufacturers such as Xiaomi or Huawei, although it seems that this is a project that has already been worked on since 2018.

This new operating system for Vivo has been developed in Rust language and, always according to what the company announces, would surpass Android in efficiency. In any case, there is no intention in the short or medium term for BlueOS to completely replace Android on the brand's mobile phones.

At the outset, we could think that this is a movie that we have already seen: alternative operating systems of Harmony for Huawei or HyperOS for Xiaomi. But there is a fundamental difference between these and Vivo's new invention: the former are compatible with Android, but not BlueOS, which would be destined to one day replace it on their phones and tablets. Hence the importance of this novelty.

In this way, we can establish three categories of mobile devices according to the operating system they use:

  • Those who use Android, which is the most widespread and used by almost all brands (except for Apple devices, of course, which use iOS).
  • Those who use Android, but adding layers of customization.*
  • Finally, those mentioned Harmony o HyperOS, which are different from Android, although compatible with it.

Well, BlueOS does not appear in any of these three categories. It is something new and totally different. An operating system independent of Android and not compatible with it.

(*) The same Vivo brand uses, for its devices marketed in Western countries, its own customization layer called FuntouchOS. It also has its own operating system only for the Chinese market called Origin OS, compatible with Android and has nothing to do with the new BlueOS.

BlueOS Features

Although there are still many details that we do not know about this operating system, the Vivo company has revealed some of the most important details and features of BlueOS:

Rust language

It is the great novelty, what marks the definitive difference of BlueOS compared to other operating systems. Rust It is an open and collaborative programming language system that began its journey in 2010. In recent years, companies such as Mozilla and Samsung have carried the burden of its development.

BlueOs is not the first operating system to be designed using this language, although it is the most ambitious project developed to date.

Why has Vivo chosen this language and not another? Apparently, the key is that through this language it is possible further strengthen memory security and at the same time, optimize its performance to the maximum. In fact, thanks to it, BlueOS will be able to work without problems using a processor with only 200 MHz and 32 MB of memory (always according to Vivo), but also with 4 GHz processors + 24 GB of memory.

Higher performance

The great argument that Vivo champions to advertise its new operating system is that it would represent a great advance in terms of general performance for the devices that use them. According to the Chinese manufacturer, BlueOS would work perfectly with limited memory usage (they give the figure of 67%). We use the conditional because there are still no reviews and tests that can confirm this.

Vivo also states that the speed of many actions carried out with our phones would increase by 18%, to which we would have to add a rendering efficiency of 48%.

In addition to all this, BlueOS incorporates the BlueXlink intercom system among all the devices that are part of the Vivo family: headphones, mobile phones and tablets. Another proof that we are facing a project with a clear vocation for the future.

Artificial Intelligence

Nowadays it seems impossible to conceive any new technological project without the help of Artificial Intelligence. And BlueOS, of course, is no exception. The new operating system is now born ready to support large AI models, with a great capacity for multimodal interaction that would allow it to generate image and text content. Interesting.

What will be the first Vivo device to run BlueOS?

I live blueos

It is the big question, for which we still do not have a definitive answer. Rumors say that the first devices to incorporate the new operating system will be the brand's next smart watch models, since this is the star product of the Chinese manufacturer. Maybe we will see it on the Vivo Watch 4?

However, the most expert voices believe that BlueOS is too sophisticated and complex a system to be limited only to the smartwatch space. Most likely, sooner or later, the Vivo phones with BlueOS burst into the market offering a serious and real alternative to the incontestable dominance of Android. The idea is good, although for it to become a success there are many other factors at play.
