How to change the SIM card without losing data from your old mobile

SIM card

When it comes to changing our phone, we not only have to change SIM card and voila, we have to make sure not lose any data. Many are the data that are stored on our mobile device, be it photos, videos, contacts, calendar data, notes ...

If you want to know how to change SIM card without losing dataIn this article we are going to show you all the steps you must follow in order to carry out this process, a much simpler process than you might imagine at first.

Change SIM card without losing data on iPhone

Activate iCloud

Activate iCloud on iPhone

The first thing we must do before anything else is activate Apple iCloud, since in a way, we will make a backup copy of all the content stored on our device through the free 5 GB that Apple offers for all users of any of its products (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac).

With 5 GB we have enough space to make one backup of the data of our contact book, calendar, notes, reminders, messages, Safari bookmarks, Health data… Each and every one of the data we will need in our new device.

To activate the synchronization with the Apple cloud of the data that we want to save, we carry out the steps that I show you below.

  • The first of all is to access Settings and click on our user ID (the first option shown in the Settings menu).
  • Next, click on iCloud.
  • Within the iCloud section, we must activate each and every one of the switches of the data that they show and that we want store in apple cloud to later restore on the new device.
The data that Apple stores in the cloud is associated with an ID, so you must use the same ID on both devices, both in the old one from which we are extracting the information and in the new one where we want it to be copied.

Photographs and videos

However, unless we purchase additional storage space, we will not be able to make a copy of the photos and videos that we have been able to do with our iPhone. If your plans do not involve hiring additional space, the best solution is to connect the device to a computer and download all the photos and videos on it.

Later, if our device has enough space, we can copy them back to the new device via iTunes selecting the directory where we have stored them on our computer.

Once you have synchronized your new device through iTunes, all the images and videos that you have taken, will be available in an album With the name of the directory, we will not find it on the reel, since only the photographs and videos that we make with our new device are stored there.

Contacts

Import SIM contacts on iPhone

The contacts with the only data, depending on the iPhone device and the version that manages it, can still be stored on the SIM card. If you do not want to lose any of the data that may be stored on the SIM card, we go to Settings - Contacts.

At the bottom of that menu, we will click on Import contacts from SIM. By clicking on this button, all the contacts stored on the SIM card will be copied to the iPhone and later synchronized with the Apple cloud. When we set up the new iPhone, the contacts will be restored on the new device.

Safari calendar, notes, bookmarks

As I mentioned above, when activating the synchronization through iCloud, all the data that we may want to keep, will be stored in iCloud and synced with the new device. This data takes up very little space (except for images and videos as I have commented), so with the 5 GB available we have more than enough.

Chrome, Firefox and other browsers bookmarks

Synchronize Firefox iPhone bookmarks

While Safari browsing data and your bookmarks are automatically synced through our iCloud account, this is not the case with data and bookmarks from third-party browsers.

If we want to synchronize the bookmarks with our new device, we must log in to the browser with an account, the same account that we must use when we download the browsers on the new iPhone.

Data from other applications

backup data iPhone apps

To keep the data of any other application that we have installed on our device, if it does not offer us the possibility of logging in with a user account (as if the browsers offer us), we must turn on syncing via iCloud.

To activate data synchronization through iCloud, we access Settings - Click on our user - iCloud and activate the switch of the application from which we want to synchronize the iCloud data. In this way, when configuring the new device and installing the application, data stored in the cloud will be synced automatically.

Make a backup

If you do not store contacts on the SIM card and you are going to switch to a more modern iPhone, the quickest and easiest solution is make a backup through iTunes.

By making a backup, you can restore the copy to your new device and you will have each and every one of the data you had on your old iPhone, including the photos and videos you had, without having to copy them to a computer and then sync them again with iCloud.

Change SIM card without losing data on Android

Like Apple allows data to be synchronized through its storage cloud, Google also offers us this option, however, this is natively activated, so we do not need to activate it. Of course, this option can be deactivated, so the first thing to do is check that it is activated.

The data that Google stores in the cloud is associated with an ID, a Google account, so we must use the same account on both devices to automatically synchronize the data.

Photographs and videos

Google Photos download

Although Google is much more generous than Apple, since it offers us 15 GB of storage, if we want to keep the images and videos in their original resolution, these 15 GB are insufficient, so the quickest and easiest solution is to connect our smartphone to a computer and make a copy of all the photos and videos that we have taken on the device.

Later, we can copy the pictures and photos to the new smartphone to always have it at hand.

If you are not interested in keeping the exact resolution, you can use Google Photos. Although this platform eliminated the free space, thanks to the compression it makes of the photos and videos (without losing quality), we can make a copy of our album in the cloud and keep it there, always at hand.

And I say have it at hand, because later we cannot download all photos and videos on our smartphone from Google Photos, at least as a whole, since we do have the option to download groups of images or videos.

Contacts

Import phonebook data from SIM

If your device's phonebook shows a name with a SIM card icon, it means that it you have stored contacts. It is more than likely that these are already stored in the terminal, so they are automatically synchronized with the Google cloud.

If we are not very clear, we go to the Contacts application, access the application options and click on Import / Export SIM card contacts. Once the contacts from the SIM card have been copied to the terminal, they will be automatically synchronized with the Google cloud and will be downloaded when we configure the new device.

Calendar

Calendar data are automatically synced with the Google cloudas these are stored on the device and not on the SIM card.

Chrome, Firefox and other browsers bookmarks

If you use Chrome as your browser, it will be configured with the same Google account as your smartphone, so you do not have to carry out any process to sync bookmarks with the Google cloud.

When you install Chrome on your new smartphone, the data from bookmarks will sync automatically without our having to take any action on our part.

Data from other applications

Synchronize application data with google

All applications with which we have logged in and / or synchronize our data with Google, all data will be automatically synchronized with our Google account, so we don't need to make a backup of the data that is stored.

When reinstalling the application on the new device, and entering the data of the Google account of our terminal, everything the content we had stored it will be displayed again automatically.

Make a backup

If you don't want to complicate your life, the simplest solution is to make a backup copy of your device and restore it on the new device. Of course, you should not skip the process of importing the data from the SIM card to the terminal, since these are not included in the backup if we have not previously copied them to the terminal.

To consider

Although the best method to copy all the content from one device to another without losing any data It goes through making a backup and later restoring it, it is not a recommended action, but it is valid for users who do not have much knowledge.

When i say that not recommended, because we are going to continue dragging the garbage that the applications have generated since we installed them in the terminal. The best we can do is follow the data that I have explained for each terminal and install the applications later.
